Project Analysis

Statistic: Educated mothers are more than twice as likely to send their children to school.

What was the statistic for your piece? Describe how you visualized it.

We visualized our statistic as three different women/girl from different generations of a family. The eldest being the grandmother, the middle one the mother, and the youngest being the daughter. This visualization helped create a contrast between the past an the present, when more mothers have been educated versus the past, where more mothers stayed home and took care of the children. We visualized the background of this artwork as three different schools, each one getting better and better, showing the increasing significance of school to women in the developing world.

What reality inspired you? Describe the location, the culture, and reality you included in your work.

Malala Yousafzai
The story of Malala Yousafzai inspired us. Malala lives in a busy city in Pakistan called Mingora, which was formerly under Taliban rule. While returning home from school Malala was threatened by the gunman, and eventually injured. However, she was not discouraged from going to school. She continued to stand up for women's rights to education and worked with many organizations to help promote education for women. In the country she lives in, the Taliban rule a great amount of land. They believe that women are not as worthy as men, and thus, giving women little rights and opportunities.

Another reality that inspired us was the book: The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. We used the idea and concept of the veil to help depict the amount of education and exposure to the modern world each girl in our artwork has.

What artwork inspired you? Give the exact work(s) titles. Explain how you incorporated this into your piece.

The Russian Dolls inspired our artwork. We used the layers of a Russian Doll to show generations in a family. Using the Russian Doll concept, we also show the difference of modernization and education of each generation. The biggest doll being the most basic and simple (the grandmother), the medium one(the mother) being the neutral one, and the smallest one (the daughter) being the most complex and most educated one.

What are personal and structural influences to your statistics.

A personal influence would be that many families want to improve their families economy as well as the education of their daughters. By sending all children, boy or girl, to school helps the family financially, as it will be easier for the children to find a well-paid job if they're educated.

A structural influence would be that the society is seeing social, environmental, and economic benefits of educating girls. Socially, families would be more stabled as the children can be cared for more thoroughly. Environmentally, women wouldn't be depleting the forests from wood if they were send to school. Economically, if women were allowed to be educated and receive a well paid job, they would be able to improve the world's economy as a whole, due to the overwhelming amount of women/girls in this world.

What are probably personal and structural solutions to your statistics?

As a student, the greatest personal solution would be to fulfill our responsibilities as students and appreciate our chance to be educated at a great school. By doing so, our children will be sent to school, and so will the children of our children.

Structural solutions would be for possible NGOs or government foundations to help build schools for women in the developing world or to open summer educational camps for girls and women to enhance their knowledge of the world.

Relation to prior class learning-how does the story of this girl-this statistic relate to something we've learned about this year?

During this quarter, we read in the textbook about women in the 19th century who joined together to fight for the voting rights of women. We relate our statistic to this as our statistic shows that, when some girls are sent to school, their children will grow up and send their kids to school. As this chain continues, more girls will be able to go to school and have an equal opportunity to learn.
